The New York Mets are feeling good right now as they enter this three-game series with the Chicago Cubs on a five game win streak. The Cubs on the other hand are looking to bounce back after losing two out of three to the Philadelphia Phillies in Philly giving up 15 runs in the three games. Can the Mets make it six straight in Wrigley Field or do the Cubs have other ideas at home?
Date: Tuesday, May 23, 2023
Time: 7:40 p.m. EST
Location: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
Team Records: New York Mets (25-23), Chicago Cubs (20-26)
Projected Starting Pitchers:
Kodai Senga (4-2, 3.77 ERA) vs Drew Smyly (4-1, 2.86 ERA)
What to Watch:
The Mets are coming off sweeping a three game series at home against the Cleveland Guardians winning all three games by one run and in dramatic fashion. In game one of this series, they will turn to rookie Japanese star Kodai Senga who is coming off perhaps his best start of his career. Senga went six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 17, striking out 12 and only giving up one run in a no-decision effort. The Mets are hoping for a similar outing in this one. For the Cubs, they will have lefty Drew Smyly take the mound for them, Smyly is coming off a strong outing against the Astros on May 17 despite losing striking eight in six innings. Despite the loss, he should still be a handful for the Mets to deal with.
Game Prediction: New York Mets 5, Chicago Cubs 3
Senga will build on his great outing against the Rays and help the Mets to a win in this one. Plus the offense for the Mets has been playing a lot better too, Mets take the opener.
