The New York Mets are looking to build off taking two out of three from the best team in baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays, as they play their second straight intrasquad series. Can the Mets make it three in a row since early April, or will the Cleveland Guardians ruin the fun at Citi Field?
Date: Friday, May 19, 2023
Time: 7:10 EST
Location: Citi Field, Flushing Queens, New York
Team Records: Cleveland Guardians (20-23) vs New York Mets (22-23)
Projected Starting Pitchers:
Cal Quantrill (2-2, 3.97 ERA), Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 8.56 ERA)
What to Watch:
This series is set to have so much intrigue with players having reunions with their former clubs. For the Mets, shortstop Francisco Lindor will be going up against his former team for the first time since he was traded to the Mets in 2021 as well as Carlos Carrasco. Lindor was a member of the Cleveland Guardians for five years, while Carrasco was a starter with Cleveland for over a decade. They will look to make an immediate impact against their former clubs. For the Guardians, two former Mets, Andres Gimenez and Ahmed Rosario will be making their first appearances back at Citi Field since they were both traded to Cleveland in January of 2021. Rosario was a Met from 2017-2020, while Gimenez only lasted one year in the Big Apple in 2020.
Pitching wise, the Mets will throw out Carlos Carrasco on the mound against his former club in game one of this series. This will be Carrasco’s first start since April 15 against the Athletics, as he’s been on the IL with a right elbow injury. He will look to make an impact right away after being on the shelf for over a month. For the Guardians, the will have righty Cal Quantrill take the mound. Quantrill is coming off six solid innings against the Angels on May 13, giving up three runs and striking out two.
Game Prediction: New York Mets 3, Cleveland Guardians, 2
I think the Mets can build off taking two out of three from the best team in the majors. Pete Alonso has been on a tear as of late and the young stars for the Mets, Mark Vientos and Fransisco Alvarez, have been shining brightly as well. The Mets will win three in a row for the first time since April 15.
