Josh Whyle
Tight End
Cincinnati Bearcats
6’6, 260
Career Stats: 131 targets, 88 receptions, 1,060 yards, 15 touchdowns, 57 first downs created
Strengths:
Whyle shines in the passing game, where his route running stands out and his speed makes him a true downfield threat. He had three consecutive 300-plus receiving yard seasons at Cincinnati and averaged 12 yards per reception over his career. He is also extremely reliable for his quarterback, being able to haul in off-target throws and secure them. Over the last three seasons, he only had four total drops. Whyle also can create mismatches due to his size and athleticism, this led to the Bearcats lining him up inline, out wide, and in the slot where he was productive each time. Over his career as well, Whyle started to improve as a blocker, showing his willingness and hand technique to do so effectively.
Weaknesses:
He can be a bit stiff on some of his breaks, leading to defenders being able to close the space and create a pass breakup. His blocking is still a work in progress as he can struggle to hold it at times, but that will all come with more reps. Not exactly quick off the line, but can showcase his speed after a few steps.
Round Grade: Fourth Round
Whyle is well on his way to being one of the most well-rounded tight ends in this class. He still needs to refine his blocking, but he has shown improvement each season so far. His versatility and high-end receiving ability is what teams should covet. His ability to produce after the catch given his size to shield defenders away will continue at the NFL level where he can develop into a long-term starter.
