The Rundown:

As they fight to stay in the mix for a Western Conference playoff spot, the Calgary Flames wrap up a four-game road trip at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa on Monday. Coming off an impressive 7-2 win in Buffalo on Saturday, the Flames will be looking to log consecutive victories for the first time in more than three weeks. This is going to be a great game between two teams eager to improve in their divisions. The Ottawa Senators look to win on their home ice, but the Flames are coming off a strong win and look to control this game.

The Matchup

These two teams have yet to play each other this year, but Canadian team matchups always bring out more goals for both teams. Calgary’s offense has improved big time, as they have been scoring 3.17 goals per game so far this year. Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau had two assists Saturday after going without a point in his previous three games. The Senators won four in a row prior to a 6-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Ottawa is seventh in the Atlantic Division, 10 points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. Goaltender Anton Forsberg was stretchered off the ice after suffering an MCL tear in both knees late in the third period. Goalie Kevin Mandolese was recalled from Belleville of the American Hockey League on Sunday. Mandolese will be the backup to Mads Søgaard after Anton Forsberg will likely be out for the rest of the season due to an injury in the last game.

Players To Watch

For the Flames, Blake Coleman is the player to watch. The third line forward has been on fire lately, generating a ton of secondary scoring for the Flames. Coleman has seven points in his last four games and has been generating a ton of shots. He’s a great high energy, gritty forward that does all the hard work to get his team the W.

For the Senators, Claude Giroux is the player to watch. The veteran center man is riding a nice six game point streak. In that span, Giroux has six goals and four assists for 10 points. Claude has 49 points on the season and is tied with Tim Stützle for second in team scoring. Giroux has been proving that he was a necessary addition to a young team trying to find their way back to the playoffs.

Prediction: Flames 5, Senators 3

With news that Forsberg won’t return for the rest of the season, I see the Senators having a difficult rest of the season in the net. Their offense is more than capable of holding their own, but their lackluster defense and downgrade in goaltending will make it harder for them to win games. Especially tonight against a red-hot Flames offense.
