The Washington Capitals finish their road trip with a stop in Denver to face the red-hot Colorado Avalanche. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:08 p.m. EST.

Washington enters tonight with a 25-18-6 record (56 points) and sit fourth in the Metropolitan Division. Alex Ovechkin has been Washington’s best player yet again, as he leads the team in point goals with 30 and points with 52. Evgeny Kuznetsov ranks second on the Capitals in points with 40 while Dylan Strome ranks third with 35. No other goalscorer in Washington has eclipsed 13 goals, as Marcus Johansson is second with 12. Darcy Kuemper has been the number one goaltender of choice for the Capitals this season. Kuemper is 14-12-4 with a 2.55 goals against average and a .917 save percentage in 31 games. On the injury front, Ovechkin (lower body) is listed as day-to-day, yet practiced yesterday.

Colorado comes into tonight’s game winners of five straight and have improved its record to 25-17-3 (53 points) and sit fourth in the Central Division. The Avalanche are led by Mikko Rantanen in goals with 32. The forward sits 18 goals ahead of Artturi Lehkonen, who is second on the team in goals with 14. Rantanen also leads the Avalanche in points with 58 while Nathan MacKinnon sits second with 51. Cale Makar rounds out the top three as he has notched 43 points this season. Alexander Georgiev has been the team’s number one goaltender this season. The 26-year-old carries an 18-11-3 record with a 2.64 GAA and a .917 SV% in 32 games. Colorado will be without Makar tonight as he is dealing with an upper-body injury.

While the Capitals took both meetings last season, Colorado smashed Washington in the first meeting between the sides this season. Tonight’s projected starting goaltenders are Kuemper for Washington and Georgiev for Colorado.

Prediction: Colorado 3, Washington 2

This game has the makings of a tight-checking, tightly contested game. With the Avalanche being the hot team and the Capitals playing some shaky hockey recently, I give the edge to Colorado, even without Makar. This has the potential to be the game of the night.
