Can The Premier League’s Sleeping Giant Wake Up?

Manchester United bested their bitter rivals Manchester City, 2-1, in a very controversial Manchester Derby Saturday morning, and that begs the question is Manchester United back?

Being one of the greatest sports franchises in history, Manchester United has not been able to live up to its potential in recent years. Manchester United is the Premier League’s sleeping giant. Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the club has failed to lift a Premier League Trophy. They have been runners-up in the Premier League twice, however, in those two seasons the club who lifted the trophy bested Manchester United by over 10 points. Since the 2012-2013 season, Manchester United has been placed outside the Champions League with an average of 4.5.

The English Premier League has been a series of runaway affairs in recent years or at most been a two-team affair. In 2023, however, it’s anyone’s game. Arsenal sits at the top of the league with 44 points on the season, five points clear of Manchester City (39), six points clear of Manchester United (38), and nine points clear of Newcastle (35).

Manchester United’s form in recent games is definitely something for Reds fans to be excited about. With the Reds’ victory over Manchester City, they have now 19 straight games across all competitions and five straight within the Premier League. This success is in part of the rebirth of Marcus Rashford, who has already scored five goals in 2023.

Fans and skeptics alike would also agree that Manchester United’s problem hasn’t been talent or their ability to win big games. It has been its ability to sustain a winning season and culture. Captain Bruno Fernandes praised Manchester United’s ability to play as a team and move away from the individualization that has plagued the club.

Manchester United has had eight managers since Ferguson’s retirement, but if this trend continues for Manchester United, it is certainly safe to say that the Reds can finally lift their 21st Premier League Title.
