The 2023 MLB season is quickly approaching! Each team will be looking for their star players to step up, and help guide them to the World Series. Each team also has stars waiting to breakout and help in this quest, TWSN MLB analysts Marissa Myers and Matt Levine will be going through every team by division to give these players. Last week was the National League West, and this week continues with the American League West.

Houston Astros– David Hensley, Designated Hitter

With Aledmys Diaz now gone, Hensley will have to step into a larger role this season for the Astros. Last season he saw limited action and went 10-for-29 with a home run, five RBIs, and a slash line of .345/.441/.586. What Hensley did in the Minor Leagues with playing four infield positions carried over into the Major Leagues with him starting at shortstop, third base, and at designated hitter. Hensley showcased his power, and was an adequate defender. Expect Hensley to see more playing time this season and fully showcase his skills.

Seattle Mariners– Logan Gilbert, Pitcher

While Gilbert had a very good year for the Mariners last season, he can be even better. He posted a 3.20 ERA last season with 174 strikeouts over 185.2 innings. He can take his game to another level in 2023 and will be a major part of the rotation in Seattle. Gilbert has somewhat broken out onto the scene already but will be nationally known after this coming season.

Texas Rangers– Josh Jung, Third Base

Jung made his debut in September 2022, and in just 98 plate appearances made his name one to watch. Over that he had nine runs, 20 hits, five home runs, 14 RBIs, and defensively had 19 putouts with only two errors. This was all while still coming back off a torn left labrum he suffered, which delayed his debut in 2022. Jung has nice power that can still be unlocked further, and that will mainly come as he gets more at-bats this season. On the defensive side of things, he plays with great range to avoid errors and has the strength to get the ball to first on target. Now with having more time to recover and prepare for 2023, Jung should emerge as a breakout star.

Los Angeles Angels– Reid Detmers, Pitcher

Detmers was solid last season for the Angels as a true rookie. He posted a 3.77 ERA with 122 strikeouts in 129 innings. His year was good for the most part but he did get sent down to the Minors at one point to work on some things but came back string. He was one of the more consistent threats within the Angels pitching staff and he is ready to fully breakout come 2023.

Oakland Athletics– Kyle Muller, Pitcher

There is no question that the Athletics needed pitching help, and that is where Muller comes into play. Over his years with the Atlanta Braves it hasn’t been fantastic with an ERA of 5.14, 1.37 WHIP, and 3-5 record. But there is still potential there. Muller is only 25, and his fastball that sits in the 90s with a great spin rate is something that highlights what he can do with Oakland to advance their rotation.
