What You Need to Know Heading Into Capital One's 'The Match'

By

The seventh edition of Capital One’s ‘The Match’ is almost here. Six months ago, we got a cast of NFL stars with Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. The match came down to an Aaron Rodgers birdie on the last hole to win the match. This time around, PGA stars are taking over once again.

With a star-studded lineup in Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, there will be nothing short of amazing shots and fun banter between the two teams. The teams for this match will be Tiger and Rory vs. Justin and Jordan.

The main headline for this event is the return of Tiger Woods after his five-month absence due to his lingering foot injury that he sustained in a car crash. The last tournament Woods competed in was the Open Championship at the Old Course in the middle of July where he didn’t make the cut for the weekend rounds. Since ‘The Match’ is played with the players in carts, Tiger should have an easier and more comfortable time playing in this event.

It is also important to note that Woods was set to play last week in the Hero World Challenge, a tournament he hosts, until he withdrew due to suffering from plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Overall, it is great to see Tiger Woods back on a golf course and competing again.

Tiger’s partner was nothing short of spectacular in 2022. Rory McIlroy is a three-time tournament winner this year and reigning FedEx Cup Champion. McIlroy is looking to have a successful start to his 2022-2023 campaign with this event being somewhat of a dress rehearsal.

On the other side, Justin Thomas is also coming off a very successful 2021-2022 campaign. He ended his campaign with eight finishes inside the top five which includes a major victory at the PGA Championship. He is looking to keep his amazing form going into this next season. Justin was able to end the season fifth in the FedEx Cup rankings.

Justin’s partner, Jordan Spieth is coming off a season with a lot of highs and a lot of lows. Spieth was able to finish the year off with only three finishes inside the top five with one of those finishes winning the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links. Jordan also couldn’t make the cut in five of the tournaments he participated in, including The Master’s and the Players Championship. Spieth ended the season 13th in the FedEx Cup rankings.
