It wasn’t easy, and it was a thrilling World Cup final right down to the end, but Lionel Messi finally achieved his World Cup win. It was all Argentina to start, as Messi scored his sixth goal of the tournament to make it 1-0 early. It didn’t stop there either as France turned the ball over and Angel Di Maria was able to get the ball and capitalize for a score, Argentina was then leading 2-0, sounds like it was all going Argentina’s way, right?

Well, that was until France star Kylian Mbappé had something to say about it. Coming into the game it was tabbed as the epic matchup between Messi and Mbappé, and it turned exactly into that. Mbappé got a penalty try and scored on it to make it 2-1. He then got the ball again shortly after to single-handedly tie the game 2-2. This sent the game to overtime, where the thrilling action did not stop.

Once again it was Messi and Mbappé leading the way as they both ended up scoring to make it 3-3, sending the game even further to be won on penalties. Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper for Argentina, stepped up to save one penalty. That plus a miss from Aurelian Tchouameni led to Argentina getting the World Cup win 4-2 on penalties.

This was the highlight World Cup for Messi, and he won it in brilliant fashion. The legacy for Messi has been completed, and he has now cemented himself of being the greatest soccer player of all time. For France, they still have a bright future with Mbappé who put the team on his back, and will continue to terrorize opponents for years to come. It was an epic matchup, and it ended in a storybook way for Argentina to win a World Cup for the first time since 1986 and Messi to fill the only void in his trophy case.
