The MLB free agent market has come fast and furious this season, which is a bit of a switch from previous years. The star studded lineup of free agent shortstops has swindled down and now Carlos Correa and Dansby Swanson remain. The battle for their services may end up being as crazy as ever considering the type of deals that have already been given out this winter. Here are a few possible landing spots for Swanson as his signing day gets closer.
3. Los Angeles Angels
The Angels have made a few moves already this winter but reportedly want to upgrade at the shortstop position. Why not try with Swanson here? He has improved every season in the big leagues and let’s be honest, the Angels need to do what it takes to make sure Shohei Ohtani wants to stay in town. Another failed season and Ohtani is almost as good as gone. Swanson would help for this year and create a pretty dynamic trio between himself, Ohtani, and Mike Trout going forward.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers
Los Angeles has lost both Corey Seager and Trea Turner in consecutive offseasons. At this time, they are looking at the possibility of Gavin Lux starting at shortstop for them this coming season. While they have said that they are confident in that plan, it may not be the best idea. Lux is extremely talented but hasn’t been able to fully live up to his potential yet. Offering a guy like Swanson a shorter term deal with a high AAV, could be enticing for him. He would also get a chance to play alongside former teammates Freddie Freeman as well. Swanson likely will go for a longer term deal than the Dodgers are willing to offer but never say never.
1. Chicago Cubs
The Cubs need to upgrade their roster. There is no being shy about that. Signing someone like Swanson who is under the age of 30 and just had another strong season, could instantly help the rebuild in Chicago. They can give him a long-term deal and have their shortstop of the future as they build the roster around him. People around the league have been waiting for the Cubs to make a major move for the last year or two so why not now.
