Houston Astros Snag First Baseman Jose Abreu In Free Agency

By

The rich get richer. The defending champion Houston Astros have added to their already impressive lineup and brought in first baseman Jose Abreu. Formerly of the Chicago White Sox, Abreu leaves the team that he has called home for his entire career.

Abreu hit 304/.378/.446 with 40 doubles, 15 home runs, 75 runs batted in, and 4.2 WAR for the White Sox in 2022. There was a clear drop in his power numbers but he did hit 30 homers in 2021. The production is still there from him and the Astros will now get to see it up close.

Batting in a lineup that also features Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve, and Yordan Alvarez should allow for Abreu to get his numbers up from this past season. The Astros are loaded and despite his age, he has showed that he can still be effective playing first base.

The former 2020 American League MVP earns a three-year contract from Houston before the chuck of free agency begins He had a few suitors for his services but joins a club that has won two of the last five World Series. Abreu is a three-time All Star and a Rookie of the Year award winner.

The Astros wanted to upgrade at first base this offseason and now they have. They still have some key free agents to try and re-sign but with Abreu now in the mix, look for Houston to remain a threat to win it all again next season.
