Jalon Daniels Is The Best Player You’ve Never Heard Of

Until this season, Kansas had not won more than three games in a football season since 2009. They had not finished with a winning season since 2008. That was also the last time they made a bowl game. All of that is going to change in 2022.

Kansas is undefeated heading into Big 12 play… IN FOOTBALL. Yes, Kansas is an undefeated 4-0 team and ranked in TWSN’s Top 25. Head coach Lance Leipold has built an offensive juggernaut in Lawrence, Kansas, and quarterback Jalon Daniels is spearheading the attack. Daniels is one of the best players in the country and if he was wearing another uniform, he would be getting much more coverage.

Jalon Daniels was a three-star recruit out of Lawndale, California. Kansas was his only Power Five scholarship offer. In his true freshman season at Kansas, he started six games and struggled to throw the ball. He would, however, be the team’s leader in rushing attempts and rushing touchdowns. As a sophomore, he started the final three games and there was dramatic improvement. His completion percentage rose from 50% in 2020 to 69.2% in 2021. He did enough to earn the starting job heading into the 2022 season.

So far, through four games, Daniels is completing 71% of his passes for 890 yards and 11 touchdowns. He leads the nation in ESPN’s QBR. Not to mention that he leads the team in rushing attempts, yards, and touchdowns on the ground. The big thing is that he’s only thrown one interception so far, and that came in the first game of the season in a blowout win over Tennessee Tech.

If he was wearing an Ohio State uniform or an Alabama uniform, odds are he’d be at the top of every Heisman list at this point in the season. He isn’t, though. So, why is that? Is it because he plays at Kansas? It probably is, and that is unacceptable. Jalon Daniels is playing like one of, if not the best player in the country. He should be in the race for the Heisman Trophy and countless other awards.

Under recruited and undervalued, Jalon Daniels has turned himself from a three-star recruit with one Power Five offer into a Heisman contender on one of the most explosive offenses in the country. Daniels and the Jayhawks have an opportunity to do something special this season in Lawrence. If I’ve learned anything from Jalon Daniels, it’s that he will overcome the odds. Don’t bet against him.
