The Rundown:

The Florida Panthers arrive in Philadelphia to take on the red-hot Flyers. The Flyers, under the direction of head coach John Tortorella, have started the year better than expected. Sitting third in the Metropolitan Division, the Flyers have a record of 4-2. Meanwhile, the Panthers have the second-best record in the Atlantic Division with a 4-2-1 record. Both teams are playing great to start the year, but this will be a huge test for the Flyers as they take on last year’s President’s Trophy Winners.

The Matchup

Last year the Panthers demolished the Flyers, going 3-0 against them. With a goal differential of 12-6, the Panthers just controlled every game against the Flyers last year. The Flyers, even with their depleted lineup, have still managed to surprise people and win games. The Panthers have the depth and overall better roster, but the Flyers have been backstopped by phenomenal goaltending. If the Flyers continue with this momentum they have, and take down the Panthers, they can prove to be a sneakier team than most imagined in the Metropolitan Division. If not, this may be their wake-up call and have them slowly fall back down to earth.

Players To Watch

For the Flyers, it is no question that Carter Hart is the player to watch. Through four games played, Hart has a ridiculous .949 save percentage and a 1.75 goals against average. Right now, it looks like he’s bounced back from an awful season last year. He finished last season with .908 SV% and a 3.16 GAA. If he continues at this pace, he can easily contend for the Vezina. But, time will be the biggest factor for the success of Carter Hart and the Flyers. For now, Hart is red-hot!

For the Panthers, Matthew Tkachuk is the player to watch. After being acquired from the Calgary Flames for Jonathan Huberdeau, Tkachuk has been everything the Panthers wanted and more. He leads the Panthers in scoring with four goals and five assists for nine points in seven games played. Tkachuk with his physical game and elite play making ability make him an exciting winger to watch. He brings a completely unique package of skills to the table that the Panthers have locked in for a long time.
