The Panthers and Islanders open their respective seasons at UBS Arena on Long Island at 7:08 p.m. EST.
Florida is coming off a President’s Trophy winning 2021-22 season but were bounced in the second round by the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Panthers also made some roster adjustments this offseason. Its biggest move was trading Johnathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar to Calgary for Matthew Tkachuk. Florida may not be as good as last season but will still be contenders in a good Eastern Conference.
The Islanders didn’t make any major moves this offseason. This team played the first month and a half on the road last season while its current arena was being built. The Isles were out of it early last year for this reason but recovered to play above-average hockey the rest of the season. This is a roster that is very similar to the team that went to the Eastern Conference Finals two years ago.
The Panthers took all three meetings with the Islanders last season, but New York was able to salvage one of six points via an overtime loss. Florida is expected to start Sergei Bobrovsky between the pipes, while New York will likely turn to Ilya Sorokin.
