Three Surprise Teams Of The 2022 MLB Season

By

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

This 2022 MLB Season has been one of the best seasons in a long time with all kinds of crazy moments like Reid Detmers no-hitter all the way to Juan Soto being traded at the trade deadline.  The good news is that we still have 50-plus games left in the regular season and postseason baseball! Here are teams that have surprised me this far into the season.

1- Seattle Mariners

Coming into the season the Seattle Mariners had the 14th best odds to win the World Series and now they have the 10th best odds. This team at the beginning of the season started off pretty sluggish and were five games under .500 at 37-42 going into July 2nd. July 2nd was the start of a much-needed 14-game win streak and they did not lose another game until after the All-Star break. That win streak propelled their record to 51-42 and helped them get into the wild card position they are in now.

They are led by American League Rookie of the Year front runner Julio Rodriguez and All-Star Ty France.  The team just recently acquired Luis Castillo from the Cincinnati Reds at the trade deadline and are hoping to make an even bigger push as we head towards the postseason.  They are only two games back from the first wild card spot and are playing great baseball right now. They are a super fun team to watch but could be a very good sleeper team in the playoffs. They are looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2001, can they end that drought this year?

2- New York Mets

The New York Mets are a very, very good team and are currently sitting at 71-39 and have a seven game lead. Before the season the Mets had the 12th best odds to win the World Series but currently have the fourth best odds. The Mets are led by first-year manager Buck Showalter and he seems to be doing a very good job. Showalter has them at the second-best record in the National League and on pace to win around 100 games.

The Mets are led by All-Stars Pete Alonso, Starling Marte, Jeff McNeil, and Edwin Diaz. They made moves to get players at the deadline that would help them continue to get better like Daniel Vogelbach, Tyler Naquin, Darin Ruf, and Mychal Givens. They will look to stay hot as they have won eight of the last 10 games, and they have two big series coming up against their division rival Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves as they look to keep their division lead. No one expected them to be as good as they are playing and have played this season, but they have proven they are a team that you will have to go through in the National League.

3- Baltimore Orioles

Before this season the Baltimore Orioles were tied for the worst odds to win the World Series. Now they have the 18th best odds and are only two games out of a wild card spot with 54 games left to play. The Orioles have not made the playoffs since 2016 and no one ever thought they would be this good and still competing in August. If they were not in such a tough American League East division, they would only be one game back in the AL Central, that is really crazy to say. They are 7-3 in their last 10 and are looking to make a big push as their next 10 games are division games which could be very crucial.

They did trade away key pieces like Trey Mancini and Jorge Lopez that could affect them in this last stretch of games but they have a bright future. They have played so well and can call it a win of a season no matter what.  The team is led by Anthony Santander, Adley Rutschman, Ryan Mountcastle, and Cedric Mullins. John Means being on the injured list all year is a negative but it has allowed other younger guys to get some time in and they are still winning. The Orioles are a good team and have a bright future ahead of them. They have surprised me because at the beginning of the year, I was very low on them and they have proven me wrong.
