Is Mac Jones the answer at QB for New England?

By ,

The New England Patriots made some strides this last season as they welcomed in the Mac Jones era to Foxborough. The hope for Jones is to be the heir replacement of legendary quarterback Tom Brady. Jones showed some promise over the season, leading all NFL rookie quarterbacks in passing yards and touchdown passes. At one point, he helped lead New England on a seven game regular season winning streak. The Patriots clinched a playoff berth but ultimately got blown out in the AFC Wild Card game against the Buffalo Bills by a score of 47-17. Now entering his second season as the Patriots signal caller the question still remains, is Mac Jones the answer at quarterback for the Patriots? TWSN analysts Isaac Nelson and Logan VanDine give their thoughts on the quarterback situation in New England.

Logan VanDine:

I believe that Jones can be the answer in New England. Part of the reason why is because head coach Bill Belichick is still around. That is a huge factor and will help in the growth of Jones as a player. New England still has weapons for Jones to throw too, despite a questionable offseason as well. He likley will only get better with time after having a solid rookie season and leading the franchise to the postseason. As long as Jones stays consistent and takes care of the football, he will remain one of the better young quarterbacks around the NFL.

Isaac Nelson:

Mac Jones had a great rookie season and showcased his ability to command an offense in the NFL. He finished 8th in the NFL when it came to completion percentage between quarterbacks, and first amongst rookies. However, the difficult thing about this question of Jones being the “answer” in New England, is whether or not he can elevate this team enough to break through a tough AFC conference. And in my opinion, Mac Jones is not the key to doing that.

He may have a few solid pieces around him and one of the greatest coaches of all time, but this does not mean Jones will be able to elevate his squad over the competition such as Joe Burrow or Patrick Mahomes. My confidence in Jones in matchups against these more elite players is low, which leads me to say that Mac Jones is not the answer at the quarterback position for New England.
