The last time the Boston Celtics walked off the floor from a meaningful basketball game, they were forced to watch and listen to the cheers of the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors had just clinched the NBA championship on the Celtics home court. It was a feeling on somberness that the franchise typically wasn’t used to dealing with. However, the Celtics knew going into the offseason that they would have other chances with this core group. After all, the team boasts two young wing players in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Boston went out and acquired the services of guard Malcolm Brogdon to add to their roster. Yet now reports have come out about the Celtics inquiring about Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant. It has been reported that the Nets are asking for Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, another rotation player, and draft picks. The Celtics have thus far been reluctant to part with the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year in Smart. However, the trade winds have reached the other main player that would be included in the deal in Brown, and he went to twitter to express his frustration.

After all, Brown just helped led this team within two wins of a championship and now he is being talked about in trade rumors. Yet, this shouldn’t be a surprise to any that has followed the NBA. The Celtics, like any other sports team, are a business after all and will do what gives them the best chance to win. If Boston has a chance to add one of the greatest players in NBA history, they should jump all over the opportunity. You make a trade for a player like Kevin Durant, each and every time. It’s rare that a player of his caliber is even on the trade market.

A trade that would be fair for both sides could look like Brown, Smart, either forward Grant Williams or guard Derrick White, and three draft picks. The Nets would get a young player in Brown, who could turn out to be a star, a defensive specialist in Smart, a rotation player, and some draft capitol. For Boston, they get a chance to pair Tatum with Durant in what would be a truly terrifying duo for opposing teams. Many Celtics fans have talked about how special this current roster is due to the homegrown talent but Durant gives them an extra boost to their title chances.

Whenever a team trades for a player like Durant, it typically works out for them no matter what they have to give up acquiring the services. The Celtics getting Durant would cause a power shift in their direction and create a strong duo for years to come. Durant is still one of the best players in the NBA and is under contract for another four seasons. Boston is a city that has become accustomed to winning and Durant would likely only add to that.

Boston could easily run it back and try again for a title, but they need to completely look into the Durant trade option. The Eastern Conference is only getting better so Boston needs to do so as well. Bringing Durant to Beantown would give the Celtics a powerhouse for years and could help them bring in title number 18.
