On National Puerto Rican Day Parade Weekend, super middleweight prospect Edgar Berlanga delivered a unanimous decision victory over Roamer Angulo in front of a supportive crowd at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Berlanga (20-0, 16 KOs) held off Angulo en route to another successful outing. The fight opened up with both fighters slugging on the inside. The feeling out process was short-lived as Angulo mixed up his strikes to the body and to the head in the second round.

Berlanga used the third round to employ his boxing skills and ward off Angulo’s pressure against the ropes. That pressure from Angulo caused Berlanga’s nose to bleed in the third round.

Angulo’s uppercut landed multiple times in the fourth round, which led to another bloodstream from Berlanga’s nose. Berlanga closed out the round with a nice combination that made up for his lapses in defense.

Through the next two rounds, Angulo continued to keep Berlanga fighting off his back foot. Berlanga had to counter Angulo’s punches as he entered the pocket.

In the seventh round, Berlanga appeared to attempt to bite Angulo during a clinch exchange. Angulo seemed to be displeased with Berlanga’s attempted bite and the referee separated them. For the remainder of that round, Angulo chased Berlanga around the ring in an attempt to corner him.

In Berlanga’s corner after the ninth round, his new head trainer, Juan De Leon, implored Berlanga to box and to secure a victory over Angulo. Berlanga used the jab in the final round, which helped him win the fight.

Berlanga faced adversity in this fight and showed that he could go the distance for the fourth consecutive match. Berlanga will likely fight another experienced veteran before he faces super middleweight world title contenders.
