The Reds are coming off an impressive series win over the San Francisco Giants. The main reason for this series win was the dominant pitching performances from Graham Ashcraft and Tyler Mahle, it also helps when the team explodes for double digit runs.
Cincinnati Reds Record 25-47
Chicago Cubs Record 28-45
Luis Castillo 3.71 ERA vs Keegan Thompson 3.10 ERA
Hunter Greene 5.66 ERA vs Justin Steele 4.59 ERA
Graham Ashcraft vs Kyle Hendricks 4.90 ERA
What to watch for:
Will the Reds offense stay hot?
The last game the Reds played they scored a total of ten runs, everyone had great at bats and continued to find ways to get on base. They probably will not score ten runs again but it could be something that helps build momentum, the old saying is ‘hitting is contagious’
Is Nick Senzel back?
Nick Senzel has been one of the more frustrating Reds over the last few years. The former top prospect has battled injuries and illness constantly over the last few years and the frustration from the fanbase is growing. He has shown flashed plenty of times but that is usually followed with a trip to the injured list. In his last four games Senzel has eight hits in 13 at bats combined with four RBIs and three stolen bases.
Keys to a series win
The Giants series showed exactly how the Reds are going to win games, they either need a dominant pitching performance or an offensive explosion. Both of these things are possible against the Cubs but the pitching is still my focus. It’s no secret how bad the Reds bullpen is right now and because of that it’s important they pitch as little as possible. The starters working deep into games will give the Reds the best chance to win until their bullpen is healthy.
The Reds have won back to back road series and I think they make it a third. Neither of these teams are very good but I think the Reds have a little more momentum coming off an impressive series win against the Giants. There is a lot that can go wrong for the Reds but I think they’ll get another series of good pitching performances which will give them the slight edge. Again, neither of these teams are great but I think we have a very competitive series ahead of us.
