The Indianapolis Colts were in the hunt to make the playoffs last season, but fell short after losing a heartbreaker to the Jacksonville Jaguars in week 18. Carson Wentz had his ups and downs throughout the year and his play had a large impact on the outcome of the Colts season last year. General Manager Chris Ballard wants to win and he made that clear after bringing in former MVP Quarterback Matt Ryan to replace Wentz. Ryan had an average year last season, but he did not have the supporting cast that he’ll have in Indianapolis. One member of the supporting cast is second round pick Alec Pierce from the University of Cincinnati.
Pierce was fourth in receiving yards and fifth in receiving touchdowns last season in the American Athletic Conference. Desmond Ridder to Pierce on a deep ball was a consistent thing for head coach Luke Fickell’s Cincinnati Bearcats this past season, as they made history being the first non “Power Five” school to make the College Football Playoffs. Pierce has the ability to stack defensive backs, high point the football down the field, sit in open windows versus zones, run past defenders with his speed, and earn yards after the catch. He showed all these traits during one of the biggest games of his collegiate career against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend. The Colts finished 26th in passing offense last season, so adding a dynamic player like Pierce was a necessity.
During this year’s Combine, Pierce showed his elite athletic ability along with his good measurements. NFL organizations love when the Combine numbers match what they see on film and Pierce is the definition of that concept.
NFL Combine Statistics:

Colts’ fans should expect to hear a lot of “Ryan to Pierce for the first down” from announcers this upcoming NFL season. Pierce will have the opportunity to learn from Indianapolis legend and Hall of Fame finalist wide receiver Reggie Wayne on a daily basis, which will be a positive factor in his growth as a rookie. As the season progresses, Alec will continue to get acclimated to the NFL and work his way to being considered for All-Rookie Team honors. The Colts got a steal in Pierce who will have a long career in the NFL.
