The NFL is in the midst of a spectacular influx of young talent at the quarterback position.
Never before has there been a quarterback “arms race” on the level that we have seen over the past few seasons. Having an elite quarterback on a rookie contract has insurmountable value, as demonstrated recently by Super Bowl teams like the Chiefs and Bengals. In 2021 we saw five quarterbacks drafted in the first half of the first round, including two teams trading future first rounders to get their guy. Teams clearly value having a top young quarterback, but who are the most valuable in the league right now?
This debate has dominated the discourse around the position. Expectations to win as soon as possible have led to teams with starters such as Baker Mayfield and Daniel Jones to be stuck in quarterback purgatory, and in Mayfield’s case be replaced by proven talent like Deshaun Watson. Teams clearly value a combination of youth, financial flexibility, potential, and above all, the ability to win now. So I decided to break down and rank my top five under-30 quarterbacks in the NFL in 2022.
Obviously, everyone has their own criteria and individual lists, but I tried to base my list off of three main principles:
- Success so far in the league
- Perceived upside and potential future success
