The last year in the college football world has been extremely unprecedented to say the least. It saw coaches jumping from different programs, NIL deals being signed, a large number of players hitting the transfer portal, and more. The recent events have many in the college football realm wondering, what’s next? There is so much more in store for the sport and its fans as the season gets closer but one of the main spotlights as we enter into the new year, will be on new LSU head coach Brian Kelly.

Kelly joined the Tigers program after leaving Notre Dame, where he had spent the last twelve seasons. Kelly has major success during his tenure at Notre Dame but could never get over the hump of winning a national championship. His record at Notre Dame was 113-40 and he became the winningest head coach in Notre Dame history this past season. He also had a few College Football Playoff appearances with the Fighting Irish but his decision to move to Baton Rouge was driven by money and the desire to win.

He believed that he had reached the ceiling at Notre Dame, even leaving the team right before a potential College Football Playoff berth. The controversy surrounding Kelly and his decision to bolt from South Bend is going to follow him to Baton Rouge. Whatever success that Kelly and the Tigers have will always be compared to that of Notre Dame as long as Kelly is the head coach.  The LSU fanbase and donors will not be as forgiving as those in Notre Dame for any shortcomings so for Kelly, the pressure is high at LSU.

His predecessor at LSU, Ed Orgeron, quite possibly is the polar opposite of Kelly. However, despite Orgeron leading LSU to a national title just a few seasons ago, the program felt it was time for a change. That change led them to Kelly and now all the pressure falls on him to deliver his promise of a national championship. The last three coaches at LSU, all won championships so everyone will now be looking towards Kelly to do the same. Yet in Baton Rouge, while fans love winning titles, they also want sustained success from the program.

Reports have it that Kelly is attempting to tighten up the culture of the LSU football team, something that was severely lacking during Orgeron’s time as head coach. He wants this to be a no-nonsense type of program that can have sustained success for a long time. Many questioned the hiring of Kelly at the time it happened but if he can get the players to buy-in while also showing results out on the football field, fans will accept him.

The clock starts now for Kelly to bring a title to Baton Rouge as the others have all won one within the first few seasons as the head coach. Brian Kelly may have the most pressure on him entering this season and while not many expect the Tigers to truly compete for a title this year, the 2022-2023 season should be seen as a building block for the future. The Tigers program got a full revamp with the addition of Kelly, and he must deliver a national title soon, otherwise he will likely meet the same fate as others before him.
