Entering this series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres, it is San Diego that has been the better teams thus far this season. Not much was expected from the Pirates entering the year and they have played much better than many thought but this series against the Padres could tell us where exactly they are. If they can go on the road into Petco Park and steal a series victory from the talented Padres, it would be huge for this franchise’s confidence going forward.

Pittsburgh Pirates Record: 18-25

San Diego Padres Record: 28-16

Friday’s Starters:

Jose Quintana 1-2, 2.43 ERA vs Sean Manaea 2-3, 4.04 ERA

Saturday’s Starters:

JT Brubaker 0-4, 4.64 ERA vs Joe Musgrove 5-0, 1.90 ERA

Sunday’s Starters:

Roansy Contreras 1-0, 2.13 ERA vs MacKenzie Gore 3-1, 2.06 ERA

What to Watch:

San Diego has stayed very much alive in the loaded NL West division, despite their star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. being out the entire season. They have relied on strong pitching and timely hitting, and it has worked out for them thus far. Against the Pirates, the Padres seem to have the advantage in the probable starters and should be able to make life difficult. Joe Musgrove gets to go up against his former club so surely, he is going to want to put on a show. He has pitched incredibly well so far this season and will look to keep that going.

Who Wins the Series:

Pittsburgh may be young, but they have played the top teams tough so far. I like them to take one of three in this series. They will make life tough for the Padres but the Padres are too good for the Pirates to win the series on the road. San Diego holds serve at home and takes the series victory in front of their fans.
