An AL West divisional matchup as the Houston Astros travel to Seattle to take on the Mariners for a three-game slate. The Astros have been very good this season and are considered one of the better teams around baseball. The Mariners on the other hand, had high expectations entering the season but haven’t quite lived up to the preseason hype just yet. They can still turn it around and maybe this series against their division foe can help. T-Mobile Park should be rocking and the fans will be ready to go.

Houston Astros Record: 29-16

Seattle Mariners Record: 18-27

Friday’s Starters:

Justin Verlander 6-1, 1.22 ERA vs Chris Flexen 1-6, 4.98 ERA

Saturday’s Starters:

Jose Urquidy 4-1, 4.24 ERA vs Logan Gilbert 4-2, 2.60 ERA

Sunday’s Starters:

Luis Garcia 3-3, 3.38 ERA vs Marco Gonzales 3-4, 3.74 ERA

What to Watch:

The pitching in this series is going to make a difference. I’d argue that on paper, the Mariners have the edge in the starters going other than Friday night since Justin Verlander will be on the mound for the Astros. If Seattle can get to him early, they’ll have a great chance to take the game. The Mariners hitters have held a mixed bag thus far this season and they’ll need to really step up if Seattle wants to get back into the divisional race.

Who Wins the Series:

While Houston may boast the better record entering this series, I like the Mariners to come away with the series victory. I have Seattle taking two of the three games from the Astros and maybe, just maybe this helps propel them back into contenders. Seattle has a ton of talent on its roster so they really should only be down for so long. Look for this series to possibly be the one that changes the way their season has gone so far.
