A little over a month into the season, the Cincinnati Reds are coming off of their first series win and will be looking to carry this momentum into their series against the Brewers.
Reds Record 5-23
Brewers Record 19-10
Luis Castillo ( season debut ) vs Brandon Woodruff 5.18 ERA
Hunter Greene 8.71 ERA vs Freddy Peralta 5.09 ERA
Vladimir Gutierrez 8.86 ERA vs Adrian Houser 3.42 ERA
What to watch for:
The Reds get their star player back
In the series opener the Reds ace Luis Castillo will be making his season debut. The Reds starting pitching has far and away been the worst in the league and this should be a major help. No Reds pitcher has completed six innings this year and while Castillo is unlikely to do so in his debut but he routinely has throughout his career. There is no secret that this is a major upgrade for the Reds.
The Reds have a long list of players on the injured list and because of that, they have been relying on some lesser known players. Two players who stepped up in a big way last series were Brandon Drury and Colin Moran. Drury went six for 11 with five runs batted run, five runs scored and one momentum changing home run. In the series finale, Colin Moran belted two home runs, with one being a grand slam. He finished witn six runs batted in on the day. The Reds will need some more guys to step up against this tough Brewers team if they want to win.
Keys to a series win
Until they prove they can do it, the keys to a series win will always be playing well rounded baseball. The offense was great last series, even though it was against the Pirates, it was still great to see. This time the Reds will need some offense but will have to get better pitching to go along with it. Even if the offense is good, it’s hard to score runs on this Brewers pitching staff. The Reds will need a great debut from Castillo and a major bounce back game from Hunter Greene if they want a chance to win the series.
The Reds finally got their first series win but I do not see a way they get their second. This Brewers team is very good and they’ll always be tough to beat. I think the Reds will however avoid the sweep by taking one of the first two games in the series. The Reds finally got some momentum but unfortunately for them, they `now run into one of the hottest teams in baseball. Better days are ahead for this Reds team.
