The Reds are coming off a tough fought series against a good Blue Jays team. Even though they were only able to take the last game, they had a shot to win each one.

Reds Record 12-28

Cubs Record 16-24

Pitching Matchups

Vladimir Gutierrez 8.65 ERA vs Drew Smyly 3.97 ERA

Tyler Mahle 5.23 ERA vs Marcus Stroman 4.88 ERA

Luis Castillo 4.60 ERA vs Kyle Hendricks 4.89 ERA

Hunter Greene 5.49 ERA vs Justin Steele 3.82 ERA

What to watch for:

Will the pitching continue to impress?

After having one of the worst starts to a season any pitching rotation could have, the Reds have been very impressive of late. Last series against a very explosive Blue Jays offense, Reds pitching held them to an average of just over two runs a game.

Will the struggles against left handed pitching continue?

Over the weekend the Reds fell to one and nine against left handed starters on the year, with the one win coming on opening day against Max Fried. The number of injuries this team has had, does not help but it is still not an excuse. This has been an ongoing issue for a few years now so I am interested to see what in season adjustments are made to combat this issue.

Keys to a series win

With how good the pitching has been of late, the Reds need to come out and produce more runs. Even though they were able to hold the Blue Jays to an average just over two, the Reds themselves were held to an average just under two runs a game. Hopefully returning home and getting some key hitters back will help. Either way this is a divisional game and the Reds have to figure out how to win these kinds of games.

Series Prediction

I think the Reds are the better team of late but that does not always matter. The Cubs have some good talent and a solid rotation. One of the main factors in my prediction is the fact the Cubs will be throwing two lefties in the series and the Reds have really struggled against lefties this year. I am going to say the Reds and the Cubs will split this four game set that includes several good pitching matchups. I expect all of these to be close games that come down to the wire, the little things in baseball will be crucial in this series.
