Cincinnati Reds vs San Diego Padres Series Preview

By

The Reds are winless ever since the owner stated, “ Where you gonna go “ in response to fans questioning his moves. Yes, the Reds are banged up and struggling, but this quote caused a huge ripple within the fanbase.

Reds Record 2-8

Padres 6-5

Pitching Matchups

Monday – Nick Lodolo ( 11.25 ERA ) vs Sean Manaea ( 1.38 ERA )

Tuesday – Reiver Sanmartin ( 6.14 ERA ) vs Joe Musgrove ( 1.42 ERA )

Wednesday – Vladimir Gutierrez ( 5.40 ERA ) vs MacKenzie Gore ( 3.38 ERA )

What to watch for

  • Will Reiver Sanmartin impress again?

Through two “starts”, Sanmartin had very polarizing games. In his first start against the Braves, he gave up five earned runs in just over two innings, and a big issue was the five walks he allowed. In his second “start” against a loaded Dodgers team, he pitched five scorless innings and only allowed two hits. The Reds desperately need a good performance out of him.

  • Will Nick Lodolo bounce back?

In his first start, he flashed his high potential but he also struggled. There was really one horrid inning that inflated his numbers but that’s still something to be cautious about. The Reds need him to avoid that disastrous inning and put together a quality start in the series opener

  • Will the offense continue to be non-existent?

Injuries happen but the Reds are missing some key players at a horrible time. Donovan Solano still hasn’t played, while Jonathan India and Nick Senzel have both missed several of the last few games. I know these are not the biggest names but they are all players who thrive against left handed pitching, and luckily for the Reds, they’ll face four lefties in five days dating back to Saturday.

Keys to a series win

I could name a few different things but there’s really just one. The Reds offense has to get going. Last year the Reds and Padres played a number of awesome wire to wire games where offense was key. The Reds offense will have to avoid quick at-bats and striking out so often which is going to be extremely tough the first two games against Manaea and Musgrove. I have a feeling that once this offense gets going things will be alright, but it currently looks like they’re nowhere close. The Reds need someone to get going ASAP.

Series Prediction

The Reds got no luck in this brutal start to the season having to face a number of top teams, and I don’t see things getting much better. If they want to steal a game in this series it’s going to have to be against a rookie pitcher in MacKenzie Gore. Gore is no slouch, as he is a very highly rated prospect much like Nick Lodolo and Hunter Greene but again he is a rookie. The Reds are looking at one win in this series and its not going to be an easy one.
