Jean Montero: Overtime Elite, 18-year-old Guard
Strengths:
- Shifty ball handler, good left to right crossover, isn’t too fazed when dribbling into a crowd of defenders, changes speeds and direction very well, creative with the ball
- One of the better passers in the class, good vision in the p&r, very flashy passer, no-look dimes to cutters, great lob passer, outlet passes to create quality transition looks
- Very talented outside shot maker especially off the dribble, very confident in his shot, has deep range on pull ups and the form stays the same even if he’s heavily contested
- Plenty of upside generating rim pressure, uses the threat of his outside shot to beat his man off the dribble, will have some gravity as a scorer, flashes as a finisher at the rim
- Has a very high ceiling, not too many guys have his combo of craftiness, passing, on ball shot creation upside, and ball-handling skill, can heat up on offense very quickly
Weaknesses:
- Doesn’t have the natural athletic advantage, not a quick first step, is not very explosive going to the rim, needs to get stronger in his upper body to separate in the NBA
- Shot selection is as bad as it gets in this class, confidence looks like cockiness when he pulls up from deep and misses badly which happens too often, flashy to a fault
- Not nearly as good of an outside shooter off the catch as he is off the dribble, doesn’t provide much value when he doesn’t have the ball in his hands, funky shot mechanics
- Haven’t seen many high-level passing reads out of the p&r, can’t routinely make that corner skip pass, makes bad decisions when defense hedges or traps in the backcourt
- Poor defender, worst motor in this class among guards, lazy when following his man off the ball, pays attention to the ball and not his man too much, lacks footspeed
