Some Friday night NBA action showcases the Orlando Magic taking on the Utah Jazz from Salt Lake City with the tip-off scheduled for 9pm EST. These two teams come in having vastly different seasons thus far within the standings. The Magic come in sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference in fourteenth place and hold a 13-43 record overall. Despite their struggles, the Magic actually play better on the road and hold a record of 8-23 away from Orlando. They have split their last ten games overall and seem to be playing more competitive basketball. As for the Jazz, they come in after blowing out the Golden State Warriors in their last game and are looking to add onto their four-game win streak. They are 34-21 overall and sit in the fourth spot within the Western Conference standings. They as well have split their last ten games and have a home record of 19-10 entering this contest. These two teams met earlier in the season out in Orlando and the Magic won the game by a score of 107-100. The Jazz will look to even up the season series as they play Orlando for the final time in this regular season.

How Orlando can win: This game is a bad matchup for the Magic as they have struggled to score the ball consistently this season and now are facing a good Utah team. There haven’t been many bright spots for the Magic so far this year, but guard Cole Anthony has been one of them. He is averaging 17.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists for the Magic and has shown some flashes of his full ability. If Anthony can have a big game here, the Magic may have a chance to steal this game from Utah. Alongside him this season has been rookie Franz Wagner who is averaging 17.1 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 53.5% over the last 10 games. Wagner can create problems for opposing teams due to his height at six foot ten.

Over the last ten games, the Magic are allowing their opponents to score an average of 112.3 points per game but will need to lower than total in this one. Utah is one of the better three-point shooting teams around the league, so the Magic need to make sure to cut off passing lanes and rotate around the perimeter, so they don’t give up open looks. They also need to attempt to quit the Utah crowd as that does play a factor in an environment like Salt Lake City and the easiest way to do that is to play well early. Getting off to a strong start can make all the difference for this Magic team tonight.

How Utah can win: In their last game, the Jazz completely blew out the Golden State Warriors after a strong second half performance. They held the explosive Warriors offense to only 85 points in the rout and it was behind strong defense. Their active hands defensively lead to easy shot opportunities on the offensive side of the ball. The Jazz had nine blocks in this game and made life difficult for the Warriors all night, so they’ll look to take some of that momentum going up against the Magic. The Magic don’t have the same type of firepower that the Warriors do so for Utah, they’ll just need to not overlook the Magic.

Utah played a total team effort last time out and should look to do the same, especially with Rudy Gobert likely still out with an injury. The team also traded away injured forward Joe Ingles, who was the heart and soul of the team for the last few seasons. If Utah can force turnovers on this Magic team and get open shot chances, they will have a great shot at winning this game. Utah is one of the best shooting teams in the league and will look to take advantage of the poor Orlando defense. Guard Donovan Mitchell didn’t have a great scoring game against the Warriors but did all the little things including adding in 10 rebounds and eight assists. He is a problem for opposing teams and I’m sure he’ll look to break out more in the scoring category in this game.

The Spread Via FanDuel:

Moneyline: ORL: (+590) | UTAH: (-850)

Spread: ORL: +12.5 (-110) | UTAH: -12.5 (-110)

Final Prediction: Utah Jazz 114 Orlando Magic 92

Utah is the better team in this matchup and has the home advantage here. Playing in Utah can be tough for many teams as it is really one of the best atmospheres around the league. Orlando has struggled to score the ball all season and against a good defensive Jazz team, I see no reason as too why they’ll start all of a sudden. Give me the home team to win this game and help keep pace in the very loaded Western Conference.
