No. 7 UFC middleweight Sean Strickland defeated No. 6 middleweight Jack Hermansson via split decision at UFC Vegas 47.

The first round was calculated and filled with low kicks from Hermansson and quick jab releases from Strickland. Hermansson changed levels twice in round two, but his attempts were brushed off by Strickland. Strickland dropped Hermansson in the final three seconds of the second round.

Strickland followed up his great end to round two with a methodical approach to his stiff jabs in the third round. Strickland continued to work the jab in the fourth round and he added leg kicks that allowed him to stay in control. In the final round, Hermansson became more active but it was not enough to steal the fight since he did not get a finish.

With the win, Strickland will be in the mix to fight for a title down the line. He will likely need at least one more win before he gets a shot at the middleweight title.

Co-Main Event Result: Nick Maximov def. Punahele Soriano via split decision

In the co-main event, Nick Maximov defeated Punahele Soriano via split decision. Maximov remained undefeated with the win over Soriano. He is now 8-0 following the victory.

The first round saw Maximov work in his grappling into the fight by latching onto Soriano’s back. The round closed out with Maximov grabbing Soriano’s left leg. Maximov suffered a cut over his eye in the second round, and Maximov maintained control in the top position in the ground when wrestling exchanges occurred. Maximov kept up his offensive wrestling in the final round and kept Soriano in a defensive bottom position for most of the round.
