  • Cole Johnson, James MadisonOne of the biggest sleepers in this year’s class is James Madisons’s Cole Johnson. Johnson completed 287 of his 422 attempts in 2021 for a 68% completion rate. He tossed for an impressive 3779 yards, 41 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. Johnson has one of the biggest frames in this year’s class standing at 6-feet-5-inch, 224 pounds. The JMU offense was really built on quick throws and allowing receivers to make plays after the catch which limited Johnson’s ability to demonstrate deep pass attempts. However, he has shown some great touch and accuracy on deep attempts. Johnson defines competitiveness when watching him play, he always fights for extra yards when rushing, he’s willing to take the shots in the pocket to get the ball off quickly, and when he hands the ball off there are numerous plays of him blocking a defender. This said he does need to learn when to avoid a hit and keep himself out of harm’s way. There are issues however, his accuracy downfield is incredibly inconsistent and his short accuracy can be way off under pressure, despite his near 70% completion. While he can maneuver out of the pocket and is willing to run the ball he is not great under pressure, he doesn’t diagnose it that well and realizes almost a second late when his pocket is being pushed in. Likely a career backup, there’s a lot to like about Johnson, he’ll slide down the board this year but has the upside to potentially be a bridge quarterback in the NFL. Keep an eye on him before April.
