In the main event at UFC 270, heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou defeated Ciryl Gane via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) to retain his world title. Ngannou was successful in his very first title defense.

Ngannou showed his grappling skills and it paid off. Ngannou showed how well-rounded he was as a champion.

The first round saw a good amount of clinching and close work on the inside. Gane fought on the outside and stayed patient. He kept Ngannou on the outside and made it hard to approach. Ngannou landed a massive slam on Gane and he became the first fighter to put Gane on his back in eight UFC fights. Ngannou closed out the third with a takedown.

Ngannou scored his fourth takedown of the fight in the fourth round and started to climb back into the fight. In the final round, Gane scored his own takedown by changing levels with 3:40 to go. Ngannou reserved and got to the top position immediately after. Ngannou closed out the fight on top of Gane and he used his wrestling to outlast the interim champion, Gane.

This was Ngannou’s last fight on his current contract. Ngannou’s future with the company is still in question.

In the co-main event, Deiveson Figueiredo became the first two-time men’s flyweight world champion with a unanimous decision win (48-47 x3) over Brandon Moreno. This was an instant classic bout.

Moreno implemented calf kicks in the first round, which limited Figueiredo’s movement in the opening round. Moreno kept control of the second with grappling and striking. Figueiredo came alive in round three when he dropped Moreno in the final 10 seconds and hurt Moreno.

The fight went down to the last round and Moreno landed an important takedown in round five. Figueiredo answered back with a knockdown and he gained some confidence back. Both fighters slugged with each other until the final horn sounded. This fight was an early candidate for the 2022 Fight of the Year. There could be the fourth bout between Figueiredo and Moreno later on this year.
