The Memphis Grizzlies have been one of the NBA’s many surprises this season, as they sit at 23-14 nearly halfway into the 2021-2022 campaign, good enough for fourth in the Western Conference. This record puts them above teams like the Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets, and Mavericks, all teams that were projected to be better coming into the season. The Grizzlies have not only set themselves up for a successful year, but for a bright future ahead.

Led by former second overall pick Ja Morant, the Memphis Grizzlies have one of the deepest rosters in the NBA. They have a good mix of youngsters and vets, all who are able to bring something different to the table at this stage in their careers. This, combined with the fact that they have a top coach in basketball makes for an instant recipe for success.

Ever since the Memphis Grizzlies took a chance on Morant in 2019, he’s helped them overachieve every regular season. In the 2019-2020 season, Memphis was projected to finish as one of the worst teams in the league preseason. They finished at 34-39, narrowly losing in the play-in game to Portland and missing the postseason. The next season, with the West getting deeper and healthier, Memphis was expected to drop back down to reality, but they managed to sneak into the playoffs after pulling off an upset in the play-in. Now, this year, despite arguably having a worse team on paper, they sit towards the top of the West in hopes of earning home court advantage in the playoffs.

Ja Morant as a player has taken a massive leap in his third year. His jump-shot has mightily improved, and he’s gotten even better at slowing down the pace of a game and taking over. His playmaking is still top notch, and his overall scoring punch has taken a massive step in the right direction. Morant has taken a jump from borderline All-Star to potential All-Star starter, and it looks as if he can lead Memphis relatively far come playoff time.

The Grizzlies have an incredible collection of players outside of Morant. Desmond Bane is another Most Improved candidate, as he’s gone from a bench player to a legitimate second option on a great team, and supporting contributors such as Steven Adams, De’Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson, and Jaren Jackson Jr. have all helped Memphis break the glass ceiling.

The Grizzlies have a young group that’s grown together throughout the years, and at this rate, it’d be shocking to not see them atop the West in the next one to two seasons. Everyone on this team is improving, and they’re just learning how to play meaningful basketball. The Grizzlies will soon take over the West, and they’re future contenders in the making.
