Outside of the road to WrestleMania, Royal Rumble season is arguably the most exciting time to be a WWE fan. Discluding the big title matches that take place on this show, the Rumble provides fans with endless possibilities and outcomes for the future of the business. The frequent unpredictability as to who will win the Rumble helps invest fans worldwide, and the audience is always on the edge of their seat waiting to see who’ll walk down the ramp next. This year, there are more potential Rumble winners than ever, making it an exciting time to follow the WWE. Who are the five candidates to win the whole thing? Let’s find out.

  • Roman Reigns

Recently, a rumor has floated around the wrestling community that Reigns’ year plus long reign as Universal champion is bound to come to an end at the Royal Rumble. Reigns is scheduled to face Seth Rollins with his belt on the line, and it’s been rumored that WWE is planning to bring the Universal title over to Monday Night Raw, while SmackDown will take the WWE title.

If this rumor is indeed true, it seems as if the plan could be to have Roman Reigns take down Brock Lesnar in the main event of WrestleMania and steal the WWE title. It’s clear as day that WWE has been planning this to be the main event for Mania ever since Lesnar’s return at SummerSlam, and the feud looks as if it will culminate with not just a title on the line, but an advocate. Paul Heyman has weirdly been playing both sides in this storyline, so it should be interesting to see where he winds up after WrestleMania.

Reigns could realistically lose the Universal title to Rollins, only to capture another top belt at the showcase of immortals. To solidify this, the WWE can book him to win the Rumble match, where he will then challenge Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania for the WWE title.

  • Big E

Vince McMahon and the WWE horribly misbooked Big E’s title reign and push. Instead of sending him from mid-card talent to main eventer in the matter of a night, they should’ve given him a slow burn and push towards the top of the card. This way, his push wouldn’t feel rushed, and he’d feel like a true main event star. In his time as WWE champion, Big E felt nothing close to a star, partly due to how rushed he was.

Despite that, due to Big E being champion for a few months, it’s clear to everyone that he’s a main eventer. To fully push him over the edge as a true star, having him win the Rumble would make things come full circle and finally make him feel like a bonafide star. WWE can make an angle where Big E is enraged after losing his title, and will do anything to get his gold back. He can progressively get stronger and stronger up until the Rumble, where he would ultimately win and challenge for a top title.

If E were to win the Rumble, it’s likely that he’d face off for whatever title is on RAW. He could very well face Bobby Lashley for the WWE title in an unfinished feud, or he can face Seth Rollins for the Universal title in another unfinished angle. Either way, Big E winning the Rumble could end up being a wise choice for WWE.

  • Brock Lesnar

Although Brock Lesnar is currently the WWE champion, this could be similar to a potential Reigns win where Lesnar loses his title earlier on in the night and then wins the Royal Rumble to challenge Reigns at Mania. There’s a real chance Lesnar can lose to Lashley, as Lashley has been booked consistently strong over the past few weeks, and there’s also a possibility of Reigns and the Bloodline interfering to cost Lesnar the win, setting up a WrestleMania angle between the two. Lesnar was the top pick to win the match before he won the WWE title, and contrary to popular belief, it’s still a possibility he stands tall at the end of the night.

  •  Edge

The winner of the 2021 Royal Rumble Edge still poses a legitimate threat to win the whole thing for a second year in a row. Edge is an icon in the business, and ever since coming out of retirement, fans have craved to see Edge win another world title. The moment would be one to remember, as Edge would regain the title that was stripped away from him towards the end of his first WWE run.

Although unlikely, Edge winning the Rumble could set up an ultimate rematch between him and Reigns. The two stole the show at this year’s Money In The Bank pay-per-view, and have a history together from their prior WrestleMania 37 program. Although this match could tie some loose ends in their rivalry, it’s clear that Reigns vs Lesnar is the direction WWE looks to go in.

What would be far more likely is either Edge vs Bobby Lashley, or Edge vs Seth Rollins at Mania. Edge and Lashley have yet to share the squared circle with one another, but it’s a dream match that many fans would love. Both men’s strengths compliment one another in the ring, and a potential Edge vs Lashley program could be an optimal WrestleMania main event if Lashley were to win the WWE title.

Edge vs Rollins was the feud of 2021, as all three of their matches delivered on a high scale. Although this would make a fourth match that may seem repetitive, it’s only fitting for Edge to win the title he never lost against the man that nearly ended his career again.

  • Drew McIntyre

Drew McIntyre winning the Royal Rumble seems like the most unlikely option on this list. McIntyre was recently written off TV due to a neck injury that should sideline him for a number of weeks, but what if there’s a chance that the WWE are overexaggerating this injury to make for a more satisfying Rumble win?

We’ve seen the WWE bring stars back early from injury to win the Royal Rumble. John Cena won in 2008, coming back early from his injury, and Edge did the same in 2010. A regular McIntyre win wouldn’t be a very satisfying moment, as he recently won in 2020 and the WWE have pushed him to the moon ever since. However, bringing him back early from an injury could make things more exciting.

If McIntyre were to win the Rumble, there are a ton of options for him heading into Mania. Firstly, he could be inserted into a championship unification triple threat between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. It’s been rumored for months that a Reigns, Lesnar, and McIntyre triple threat could headline WrestleMania, and this could be a good way to do so. There’s also a possibility he goes up against Reigns one on one for the Universal title, as that feud has been teased multiple times before. Or, on the contrary, McIntyre can face Lesnar in a WrestleMania 36 rematch, in hopes of repeating history from that year.

One final option that seems more unlikely is McIntyre vs Rollins. If Rollins were to win the Universal title at the Rumble, McIntyre could certainly be the one to challenge him. This is a match that hasn’t happened too many times before, and could be an interesting bout at Mania for a top belt.
