In less than three weeks, UFC interim heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane will challenge Francis Ngannou for the undisputed UFC heavyweight championship at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Gane took the UFC by storm in 2021 with three wins over top-10 heavyweights. He went from being a promising prospect to a legitimate heavyweight contender in less than a year. Now that he has an interim title, there is no denying his potential as an elite heavyweight.

At UFC 270, Gane will be in for the biggest fight of his life against his former teammate, Ngannou. This will be Gane’s most dangerous opponent because Ngannou has devastating knockout power that can change the sequence of a fight.

With that being said, Gane has plenty of experience fighting knockout punchers. His last four opponents have a combined total of 69 TKOs/KOs. He found ways to avoid being hurt by those lethal punchers and outsmarted them en route to four impressive victories. Those four opponents were Junior Dos Santos, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Alexander Volkov, and Derrick Lewis.

Heading into 2021, the jury was still out on Gane. He had a TKO win over Dos Santos but critics questioned the win because of a vicious elbow to the back of the head against an aging legend, Dos Santos.

Before his win over Dos Santos at UFC 259, Gane had a year layoff between fights. He was still an unknown heavyweight from France but that win gave him some legitimacy.

In his three fights in 2021, he only improved as the competition stiffened. He proved that he had the best movement in the division and was the most well-rounded heavyweight. As the lights grew brighter, Gane delivered on the biggest stages. He competed in two Fight Night main events and headlined UFC 265 in Houston.

UFC 265 proved that Gane could neutralize Lewis, the greatest knockout artist in UFC history, and pick him off round by round. Gane dispatched Lewis in round three via TKO and clinched the interim heavyweight championship.

Jan. 22, 2022, will be an important day in heavyweight history because it will be the day that two former teammates fought each other for the heavyweight title. If Gane is able to become the unified heavyweight champion, he will continue to impress fans from across the world with his elite striking and clinical grappling. Gane has only been a professional MMA fighter since 2018 and if he is able to win the heavyweight title at UFC 270, 2022 will be Gane’s breakout year.
