This weekend, December 18th-19th, Tiger Woods and his son Charlie, along with other past major winners and their partners will be competing in the PNC Championship, in Orlando, Florida.
This will mark the second time Tiger and Charlie have competed in this event, and the first time in nearly a year we see Tiger Woods compete after his car accident. Surely the main focus this weekend will be on the Woods team, checking in on how comfortable Tiger looks out there, and seeing how much Charlie’s game has improved.
The PNC is a scramble format, in which both players tee off and the best ball is chosen. Given those rules, my guess is we see them use Charlie’s ball off the tee box most of the time. If I were to guess, I would say Tiger is probably around 70% coming into this weekend, as far as power and stamina goes. A handful of videos have been tossed around twitter recently of Tiger hitting some very solid golf shots. Despite everything this man has gone through, he still has some of the greatest hands in golf, and is an absolute wizard with an iron. Tiger Woods is making what is usually a celebratory exhibition, one of the most must see golf events of the year, and I cannot wait to see him return to golf with his son Charlie this weekend to see the new moments they make.
The Woods family isn’t the only notable duo teaming up this weekend though. Twenty teams of ex-Major / Players Champions will be competing including..
- Rich Beem & Michael Beem
- Lee Trevino & Daniel Trevino
- Mark O’Meara & Shaun O’Meara
- Matt Kuchar & Cameron Kuchar
- Nelly Korda & Petr Korda
- Nick Faldo & Matthew Faldo
- David Duval & Brady Duval
- Gary Player & Jordan Player
- Henrik Stenson & Karl Stenson
- Stewart Cink & Reagan Cink
- Tom Lehman & Sean Lehman
- Jim Furyk & Tanner Furyk
- John Daly & John Daly Jr.
- Bubba Watson & Wayne Ball
- Justin Thomas & Mike Thomas
- Nick Price & Greg Price
- Padraig Harrington & Paddy Harrington
- Tom Watson & Michael Watson
- Vijay Singh & Qass Singh
The first round starts Saturday at 9:45 a.m. est., early coverage from 12:30-1:30 p.m., and the main broadcast begins at 2:30-5:30 p.m. on NBC.
The second round begins Sunday at 9:45 a.m. est., early coverage from 11a.m.-12, and the main broadcast begins at 1- 4:30 p.m. on NBC. The PNC will also be streamed on Peacock & Golf Channel.
Team Thomas who won last year, is the betting favorite to win again at (+180). Some other notable odds Woods (+1000), Kuchar (+650), Daly (+800), Singh (+1200) and Watson (+1000).Justin Thomas who is ranked 6th in the world, is teaming up with his father Mike who is also a PGA professional. Former US Open winner John Daly is playing with his son Jr. who plays golf at the University of Arkansas. Former Masters Champion Vijay Singh will be playing with his son Qass, last year they were one stroke runner ups to team Thomas.
The golfers won’t have to worry about world rankings or FedEx points this weekend. The PNC Championship purse is up to $1,085,000. The winning group will take home $200,000. For my prediction, my heart says team Woods, my brain tells me team Thomas. I think it would be worth throwing a small wager on both. Either way, this will no doubt be one of the most memorable sporting events of the year that I can’t wait to enjoy this weekend.
