With a mountain of injuries, the Lions were unable to keep the game competitive on the road, losing 38-10 against the Denver Broncos.

All week the Lions were battling Covid and the flu, on top of regular December NFL attrition. 23 players showed up on the injury report for the Lions this week. The offense was missing current starters, Evan Brown, T.J. Hockenson, Jamaal Williams, D’Andre Swift, meanwhile the defense was without Julian Okwara and Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

The Broncos ran right out from the gate, owning the first quarter. They held onto the ball for 12:30 minutes, scoring two touchdowns, a five-yard Javonte Williams touchdown in which he muscled his way through backups Jalen Elliot and Dean Marlowe, and a one-yard Melvin Gordon touchdown. In between these run-heavy drives, the Lions held the ball for under two minutes, punting after three plays.

In the second quarter a 35-yard Craig Reynolds run, with 30 of those yards coming after first contact, helped the Lions’ offense march 75-yards on seven plays ending on a seven-yard touchdown catch by Kalif Raymond.

The Lions’ defense stiffened up, not allowing any other points in the first half, giving the offense the chance to score three points coming off a 38-yard Riley Patterson field goal. Keeping the game close as the first half came to a close.

The defense did lose Alex Anzalone and Jerry Jacobs for the remainder of the game, and it would start to show in the second half.

The Lions started the third quarter with the football, however, Godwin Igwebuike fumbled the ball two plays into the drive after trying to gain the first down. The Broncos were able to score off the turnover with a 10-yard Williams catch and run.

Jared Goff and the offense went four and out on their following possession, giving up the ball on their own 33-yard line and having his pass on the fourth down attempt get batted to the ground.

The Broncos were able to take advantage of the field position, running the ball four times with the fourth being a 14-yard touchdown run by Gordon. Extending the Denver lead to 31-10 with six minutes left in the third quarter.

A fourth quarter Goff interception, in which Justin Simmons undercut the route and was completely horizontal, sealed the fate for the Lions. As they would score no more points and allow another Broncos touchdown.

Amon-Ra St.Brown had himself a good game with a few nice stiff arms on top of collecting eight receptions for 83-yards. Craig Reynolds also finished the day with 83-yards off of 11 carries.

The Lions weren’t able to make it back-to-back wins after last week’s last-second heroics. With a slew of injuries the Lions struggled to stay in the game for four quarters. They will look to bounce back next week at home, and will have a challenge doing so against a hot Arizona Cardinals team.
