Kayla Harrison vs. Cris Cyborg is the Fight to Make

Bellator matchmakers have a huge fight to make, but there’s just one problem. Kayla Harrison is a free agent and is probably the hottest free agent of recent memory. She has been dominant through her PFL championship reign and she is looking to fight a higher level of competition. Obviously, the most competitive fight that Bellator could make, would be giving her the featherweight title shot against Cris Cyborg. So what’s stopping this from happening you may ask? Let me explain.

First off Harrison is not under the Bellator roster. Scott Coker will have to throw her THE bag to get her to leave from PFL. In the PFL there is a $1 million tournament in which she has won three consecutive years now. To pull someone away from that type of money would require a larger amount of money to be thrown at them most likely, but for her, she says it’s strictly about competition. The best competition for her would be to get a fight against a top-level contender in Bellator, and then after that, if she gets the win, then throw her in for a title shot against Cyborg.

The second issue with this is that Cyborg does not look interested in talking about her and building this fighter. Recently after her win over Sinead Kavanaugh, Cyborg was asked about Harrison at the press conference and elaborated that she will not be giving her moment of shine to her. She stated that she understood that the business is looking to get behind Harrison, however, she is uninterested in talking about that as of now because she thinks she’ll return to the PFL.

Even though she’s a free agent, Harrison has been linked to signing with Bellator, however until it’s inked in writing, Cyborg won’t even discuss her. The reason that this is a problem is that the more traction that this fight gains, the more money it can generate for Bellator. Coker probably wants Cyborg to talk about it more often just so that they can build the fight up between two of the greatest women’s fighters on the planet at the moment.

The last problem of this dream scenario is simply the timing. If Harrison came directly to Bellator it’s unlikely that she would get a title shot right away. Given the state of the current featherweight division, it would only make sense for her to fight a name like Cat Zingano or Leah McCourt. Cyborg called for a matchup with Zingano after Bellator 259, however she was unsuccessful in getting the bout she wanted. It’s likely that she’ll match up with Zingano now, which would leave McCourt for Harrison.

If all goes well, they will both be on the same card, or maybe a week or so after one another so that we can have the next fight booked in a reasonable amount of time. If Cyborg and Harrison both go out and get finishes, which they almost always do, then the stars will have aligned and we will get the matchup we are so desperately looking for.
