Later this evening, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees will face each other in the AL Wild Card Game at Fenway Park in Boston. The biggest rivalry in sports will be showcased to a national audience in an elimination game.

The probable starters will be Nathan Eovaldi and Gerrit Cole. Eovaldi has been the ace for the Red Sox this entire season with an 11-9 record, 3.75 ERA, and 195 strikeouts. Cole enters the postseason with a 16-8 regular-season record, 3.23 ERA, and 243 strikeouts. This game will feature top-flight pitching.

In four outings against the Red Sox, Cole has a 4.91 ERA with a 2-2 record. The Yankees will need their top pitcher to perform at a high level against the Red Sox.

The winner of the game will move on to play the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS later this week. The AL East will be represented well in the postseason because that division is guaranteed a spot in the ALCS as a result of the playoff seeding.

The final game of the season for the Red Sox and Yankees took place on Sunday in one of the most crucial last days of the season in a long time. The Red Sox secured the top wild card slot with a 7-5 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday in Washington.

For the Yankees, they sealed up the final wild card spot with a 1-0 victory against the Rays. The game was decided by an infield hit that scored the winning run and clinched a playoff spot for the Yankees.

Both the Red Sox and the Yankees held off the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners from stealing the two wild card positions. The Red Sox and Yankees had to win on Sunday or there would have been a tiebreaker game if one of the other two teams won on Sunday. Fortunately for the Red Sox and Yankees, they handled business and eliminated the Blue Jays and Mariners automatically.

For Tuesday’s game, Red Sox left fielder J.D. Martinez is questionable to play after he suffered an ankle injury in Sunday’s game. If he is unable to play against the Yankees, that will be a big blow to the Red Sox’s lineup.

It does not get any better than Red Sox-Yankees in a winner-take-all game to reach the ALDS. The first pitch will happen at 8:00 p.m. EST.
