Oleksandr Usyk put the heavyweight division on notice with a unanimous decision win over Anthony Joshua on Saturday. Usyk became the WBA, WBO, and the IBF world heavyweight champion.

The next likely fight for Usyk is a rematch against Joshua because of the rematch clause in the fight contract. This was an outcome that shocked many people because this was only Usyk’s third contest as a heavyweight. He was always viewed as a skillful fighter, but there were question marks around his ability to win a heavyweight title.

Usyk (19-0 record, 13 KOs) was once viewed as the best cruiserweight in the world from 2016-2018. He jumped up in weight to the heavyweight division in 2019. Since he joined the heavyweight division, he had his eyes trained on Joshua.

The risk Usyk took by leaving the cruiserweight division paid off on Saturday night, and now he placed himself in the mix as a heavyweight champion. Usyk is in the driver’s seat for a rematch with Joshua, and if he can win a second fight against Joshua, Usyk will get to pick what he wants to do later on.

The heavyweight division is in a weird place due to the upcoming Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder III fight on Oct. 9. With Usyk coming out on top against Joshua, the winner of Fury-Wilder III will have to go their own way or wait to unify the titles against the winner of Usyk-Joshua II.

People doubted Usyk’s size as a heavyweight, but his head movement, footwork, and power made up for the lack of height. He can cause problems for any heavyweight, which adds another complex layer to the heavyweight title picture.

Usyk will have a tough rematch against Joshua ahead of him within the next year, but if he is able to go 2-0 against Joshua, he will become one of the biggest names in boxing. In terms of fame, Usyk certainly became more famous with a win over Joshua. With his win over Joshua, Usyk deserves to be ranked amongst the top 10 pound-for-pound boxers in the world.
