Penny Hardaway strikes gold again this recruiting season, the #3 overall commit Emoni Bates has committed at the last moment to the University of Memphis, giving them the number one overall recruiting class for the class of 2021. Bates made the decision to reclassify into the class of 2021 at the last possible moment with less than 100 days until the beginning of next year’s college basketball season.

Bates now joins Jalen Duren as a terrific freshman tandem of two top 10 recruits with Duren being ranked seventh overall in the country. Bates now reunites with his former EYBL teammate in Duren to create arguably the top freshman tandem in all of college basketball next season. This is yet another major commitment from Penny Hardaway who has been on a tear since becoming the head coach of the Tigers, but has yet to make the tournament going to his fourth year with his biggest accomplishment thus far winning the NIT.

The G league was long seen as the favorite to big up Bates and his services since he decommitted from Michigan State but with the creation of the NIL in collegiate sports allowing athletes to make arguably even more money in college instead of the G League. It remains to see how long Bates will stay a Memphis Tiger with the NBA draft rules at this point in time not allowing him to enter the 2022 NBA draft with him not becoming 19 in next year at any point, Bates could be very likely to be a one and done and possibly join the G League after this upcoming season to continue his growth if Memphis is unable to contend for a national championship after this season.

But for now, the Memphis Tigers will be a fascinating team to watch as they will now likely enter the season around the top 10 and be the favorites to win the American League and what will now be a massive year for Penny Hardway to prove why Memphis hired him in what could be a make or break season for him.
