Washington Exploring Options with the #2 Pick

The NFL world is buzzing at the possibility of the Washington Redskins not selecting Ohio State pass rusher Chase Young at 2nd overall. Instead, the rumor is that the Redskins may use the pick to select Alabama Quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa.

The thought process behind picking a quarterback in the first round again was set in motion when Head Coach Ron Rivera had expressed multiple times that his intention was to start winning games quickly.

This indicates that Rivera does not plan to have a slow rebuild for the franchise. These comments also hint that Rivera may not be willing to stick around and develop Dwayne Haskins, who has had a poor start to his pro career.

Last year, the Cardinals showed there might be some pros to moving on from a quarterback quickly if you see a better prospect in a upcoming draft. In the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cardinals chose Josh Rosen 10th overall. After the 2018-2019 season, the Cardinals finished with a 3-13 record and the 1st overall pick in the 2019 draft.

After the disappointing season, Head coach Steve Wilks was fired and Kliff Kingsbury was hired. The Arizona Front Office, despite criticism from the league, answered Kingsbury’s wishes and drafted Kyler Murray 1st overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The day prior, Rosen was traded to Miami for a 2nd and 5th round pick. Murray would subsequently lead the cardinals to a 5-11 record in a powerhouse NFC West Division.

The Redskins may attempt to replicate the Cardinals success in this draft. Haskins can be shipped out to a number of QB needy teams for what can be considered a steal compared to his draft stock during lasts year’s draft.

Tua Tagovailoa seems like he will be better quarterback out of the gate than Haskins. Before Tagovailoa’s season ending hip injury, he was considered the best quarterback available in the draft until he was eventually overtaken by Joe Burrow.

At Alabama, Tua threw for 7442 yards, 87 touchdowns, and only 11 interceptions during his entire Alabama Career. While Tagovailoa’s stats are impressive, he does have a long history of injury.

In 2018, Tagovailoa injured his left ankle in the SEC championship game against Georgia. After the game, Tagovailoa would get a TightRope procedure on that ankle helping him return for the College Football Playoff Semifinals.

In 2019 against Tennessee, Tagovailoa injured his right ankle, which he chose to have a TightRope surgery done on the ankle. Most recently in 2019, Tagovailoa dislocated his hip in a game against Mississippi State which ended his season.

Dwayne Haskins was widely considered as the second best quarterback in the 2019 Draft after Kyler Murray. It was a big surprise when the Giant’s passed on Haskins to choose Daniel Jones with the 6th overall pick.

It was believed that the Redskins got a steal when they drafted Haskins 14th overall. As the season went, on it became apparent why the Giants placed Jones above Haskins on their draft board.

In the 2019-200 season, Haskins threw for 1365 yards and 7 touchdowns on 7 interceptions. Of the games he started, Haskins has a record of 2-5.

When making a decision of choosing another quarterback, the front office, and by extension Ron Rivera, must look at the opportunity cost of not drafting Chase Young at 2nd overall.

Chase Young seems to be the best pass rushing prospect since Myles Garret. Young is a physical beast and only the most athletic tackles can line up against him.

Young is also technically sound and his technique will only get better once he gets to the NFL. Young recorded 16.5 sacks in 12 games with the Buckeyes averaging 1.375 sacks a game.

History has shown us that a great defense will get a team farther than a great offense. Poor QB play can be made up for with an elite defense as seen with the 2017 Jaguars and Blake Bortles, the 2018 Bears and Mitchell Trubisky, and the 2019 Patriots and Tom Brady.

It is my opinion that the Redskins should not rush to an early goodbye to Dwayne Haskins based on half a season of play. The Redskins should focus on putting pieces around Haskins that will elevate his play. One of those pieces would be to add Chase Young to the defensive line so the defense can help take some pressure off Haskins.
