Patrick Reed won the 2018 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club Sunday afternoon after defeating an elite field that included Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Jon Rahm making strong pushes throughout the day.
Spieth started the day 9 shots off the lead, and despite shooting a 64 in the final round (which included a bogey on 18), finished in 3rd just two back of the lead. “To be able to have a chance to win this tournament five years in a row is really, really cool. That’s how I am going to take today,” Spieth said after his final round of 8-under.
Fowler (solo 2nd at -14) and Rahm (solo 4th at -11) made strong pushes on Sunday as well, combining to go -8 but ultimately neither could snatch their first major. Reed will go home with a $1.98 million check and his sixth victory on Tour- but arguably his favorite prize will be a Green Jacket given to him by 2017 Masters champ Sergio Garcia and the members at AGNC.
Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson, a veteran favorite this week, struggled to make birdies until Sunday, where he shot a 5-under 67 to finish T36 at +2, 17 shots off the lead. “I was just a little bit off and I’ll take a week or two off and I’ll regroup and get back at it,” Mickelson said.
Another notable player in the field this week was Tiger Woods, who made the cut but struggled throughout the week to make putts and keep the ball in the fairway. Despite shooting a 3-under 69 on Sunday, he finishes T32 at +1 for the tournament. “My swing is slightly off,” Woods said. “I was pleased with the way I was able to drive it, but I just could not convert with my irons. I struggled with obviously controlling the shape. Can’t control the shape. Can’t control the distance. And it was one of those weeks in that regard.”
The PGA Tour will head to Hilton Head, South Carolina on the 12th for the RBC Heritage Open. Wesley Bryan is the defending champion, and players will be competing for a $6,700,000 purse at Harbour Town Golf Links.
