Paul Casey won the Valspar Championship after shooting a 6-under 65 to finish at -10 for the tournament, defeating Patrick Reed and Tiger Woods who both finished at -9. After posting a 33 on the front 9, Casey rattled off a trio of birdies on holes 11-13 and closed out by playing the “Snake Pit” even to enter the clubhouse as the sole leader. Reed, who eagled his opening hole, was at -10 going into the 18th hole. However, after a costly bogey he dropped down to -9 and entered the clubhouse in solo 2nd. Woods had a relatively quiet round- after getting a birdie on 1 and later bogeying the tough par-3 4th, Woods parred his next 12 holes until he walked up to the 17th tee box.
Knowing he had to birdie his next two holes to force a playoff, he stuck his tee shot in the middle of the green leaving a lengthy 44 ft putt. After sinking the birdie putt on 17, he teed off on 18 and left himself a 173 yard shot from the fairway. Unfortunately for many of the roaring fans in attendance, Tiger just missed his 36 foot birdie putt on 18 and tapped in for par to stay at -9.
Other notables on top of the leaderboard included Sergio Garcia, who also shot a final round 65 with 8 birdies and finished solo 4th at -8, Justin Rose who finished T5 at -7 after shooting a 1-over 72, and last year’s champ Adam Hadwin who finished T12 at -4.
