The Waste Management Phoenix Open returns to TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course this week with an exciting field! Here are the Wrightway Network’s Top 5 Power Rankings:
5. Daniel Berger
Berger comes in fresh after shooting a final round 64 at the Sony Open in Hawaii en route to a 14th place finish. He’s 5/5 in cuts made this year, and finished T-7 at the 2017 WM Phoenix Open.
4. Webb Simpson
Simpson lost to winner Hideki Matsuyama in 2017 after a 4-hole playoff. In 2016, he finished T-14 as well. Simpson’s game is looking good early into the season, as he’s ranked 4th on tour in both scoring average and scrambling.
3. Rickie Fowler
The 7th best player in the world according to the WGR, Fowler ranks 2nd in scrambling this season on tour. In Phoenix, he finished T-4 last year and lost to Matsuyama in 2016 (also in the form of a 4-hole playoff). Fowler’s Palmer-esque personality blends perfectly with the rowdy crowd at the Stadium Course, so look forward to him encouraging the crowd to make some noise throughout the week.
2. Jordan Spieth
Like Berger, Spieth also hasn’t played since Hawaii in early January. His 68.8 scoring average this season coupled with his T-9 finish last year suggests he’s on track to play well again this season. For added motivation, he might look up at newcomer Jon Rahm who’s also in the field this week, and who Spieth trails in the WGR to.
1. Hideki Matsuyama
Will a 3-peat happen? Matsuyama is chasing his 3rd straight win at Phoenix after back-to-back playoff wins in 2016 and 2017. Since 2015, in his last 12 rounds he’s played -45 at TPC Scottsdale. What should he worry about? Including him, 5 of the top 7 players in the world are in Arizona this week.
