SummerSlam: Pre-Match Analysis and Predictions

The biggest party of the summer is here! SummerSlam is sure to make a massive splash on the professional scene tonight. Let’s get into our pre-match analysis and predictions.

The Street Profits vs. Andrade and Garza – RAW Tag Team Championship

Matt- WWE will keep the usual tradition of babyfaces winning the opening match. With tension rising between Andrade and Garza, expect the Street Profits to take the win here. Winner: Street Profits

Chris- It seems that WWE is still angling for Andrade and Garza to split up, so it would be weird to make them win the tag titles now. Winner: Street Profits

Mandy Rose vs. Sonya Deville (No Disqualification/Loser Leaves WWE)

Matt- With the recent horrifying events regarding the break-in at Sonya’s house, as well as her interest in acting roles, it wouldn’t surprise me if Sonya wants to take a break from wrestling (no blame to her, of course). I originally had Mandy Rose winning, as this match seemed like the logical conclusion of their feud, and I still have her winning now. Winner: Mandy Rose

Chris- With the disturbing events that Sonya had to experience, it seems likely that Mandy will win so Sonya can take some time off and get any help that she might need. Winner: Mandy Rose

Bayley vs. Asuka (SmackDown Women’s Championship)

Matt- With the potential for outside interference from Sasha Banks, as well as Bayley’s whiny heel character still looking strong, I think Bayley takes this one. They have to build to a Wrestlemania match between Banks and Bayley somehow, and the story is better with Bayley as champion as opposed to Banks. Winner: Bayley

Chris- Shayna Baszler will get involved one way or another. Bayley will win due to a sketchy finish which will set up a rematch at Payback. Winner: Bayley

Dominik Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins- Street Fight

Matt- Dominik has to go over. It’s his first match, and the storyline has been him overcoming the odds. Winner: Dominik Mysterio

Chris- It wouldn’t make sense for Rey to lose the match to Rollins and have Rollins win the second fight. Rey could get involved, as could Owens, Samoa Joe, or Aleister Black. Dominik will win with some outside interference. Winner: Dominik Mysterio

Apollo Crews vs. MVP- US Championship

Matt- The Hurt Business needs to stay strong, and MVP is the—for lack of a better word—MVP of RAW at the moment. The Hurt Business vs. Street Profits will be the next big feud, so MVP wins here to keep the Hurt Business strong. Winner: MVP

Chris- MVP lost the first time but they’re trying to build the Hurt Business up. It makes no sense for him to lose again. Winner: MVP

Sasha Banks vs. Asuka (RAW Women’s Championship)

Matt- They’re angling for a big Banks-Bayley match at Wrestlemania and one person needs to lose. The story told here should be that of Banks helping Bayley but Bayley neglecting Banks. Asuka wins and regains her RAW Women’s Championship. Winner: Asuka

Chris- Bayley’s been angled as a bigger deal so Sasha should probably lose. There’s always the potential for a screwy finish. Winner: Asuka

Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt (Universal Championship)

Matt- Bray Wyatt will win. I can see Braun Strowman stooping to crazed levels and potentially breaking or fracturing the Fiend’s mask and destroying him, only for Alexa Bliss to come in and stop Braun from tearing Bray apart. This would leave Braun susceptible to a Mandible Claw, giving the Fiend the victory and healing Braun. Winner: Bray Wyatt

Chris- It wouldn’t make sense for Bray to lose his second shot at the title in a few months. What would Bray do next if he loses? He needs the win to keep his character going. Winner: Bray Wyatt

Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton (WWE Championship)

Matt-  Drew McIntyre is on fire right now and he’s got what it takes to be a champion. I think at some point Ric Flair comes out to distract Randy Orton. There’s not enough babyfaces to challenge Orton and Drew’s about to have a bunch of challengers. I can see his next challenger being MVP, but the biggest issue is that there aren’t enough faces for a potential Orton reign. The only way Orton wins is if Keith Lee is called up and gets pushed as a main-event player instantly, but I think it’s way too early. Drew’s the face of a new era—and he’ll remain champion. Winner: Drew McIntyre

Chris- It makes more sense for Drew to win. Technically the punt should be banned since it’s a straight one-on-one match. I think Randy goes for the punt and McIntyre counters it and turns it into a Claymore somehow. The  babyface on RAW to fight is Kevin Owens or someone from NXT, like Keith Lee. Drew retains here. Winner: Drew McIntyre

Will Retribution debut?

Matt- They will. They’re gonna debut like Fish and O’Reilly did back at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn 3 after the tag team championship match. They should go to RAW and in a perfect world Dominik Dijakovic (who I believe is the ringleader) will face Drew McIntyre down the line. Could Orton be the leader? Verdict: Retribution debuts

Chris- It makes sense for them to debut. It’s the second biggest show of the year, so they have to get something going. Verdict: Retribution debuts

Who will main event?

Matt- Strowman-Wyatt. The Fiend has main-event appeal, and this is the biggest storyline on both RAW and SmackDown.

Chris- McIntyre-Orton. Strowman-Wyatt main evented the last PPV, so there will be a probable switch up.
