After starting off the 2020/2021 Premier League season on great form, Tottenham Hotspur have fallen back in the standings to seventh. However, the league is still very tight and they are only three points off of top four. For Jose Mourinho’s Lilywhites to push for a coveted top four finish, Tottenham must bring in some additions in the January transfer window.
One position of need for Spurs is a creative midfielder. Tottenham is currently playing Tanguy Ndombele at the “10” when his best position is the “8” or “box to box” role in the midfield.
There are a few possibilities for a creative midfielder for Tottenham this transfer window. One option that has been rumored is RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer. So far this season he has three goals and three assists in 16 appearances for RB Leipzig. While these numbers are not great, last season he had double digit goals and assists with 16 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. If he could pick back up that form it could help Tottenham in their need for creativity in the midfield.
Another creative midfielder that Tottenham could possibly bring in this January is Papu Gómez from Atalanta. While Gómez is on the older side at 32 years old, Tottenham is going all out for trophies this season and next season. He is still producing at a high rate as well, as in 16 appearances this season Gómez has five goals and four assists. His ability to linkup play would work great with Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min.
Another position of need for Spurs this transfer window is a center back. Tottenham’s current starters are Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld who are not quick enough and are not good enough in the air for Spurs.
One surprising possibility for Tottenham is Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos. Ramos, although 34, is still an extremely good player. His ability at the center back position is still one of the best in the world and his leadership is much needed in the Tottenham back line. Ramos is also good in the air which has been one of the biggest issues for Spurs defenders.
Another player Spurs may bring in this January at the center back position in Nikola Milenkovic. Milenkovic is only 23 and wins a good amount of aerial duels. His ability to win aerial duels could help Tottenham solve their problem of conceding goals off of set pieces. Milenkovic is also young, so he will only continue to improve over time.
These are the two positions that Tottenham must address in the January transfer window if they want to compete for trophies and top four this season. If they do, Tottenham could pick up form again and possibly get back into the title race as well.
